It was brought to my attention by a friend awhile back that aprons are not a necessity as she said "I only wear an apron to cook when I come to your house." I thought about this earlier this week (as I have quite a bit of free time at work right now) and was impressed to do a blog entry about it.
While I understand that cooking can occur without one, I can't help but wonder why you would want to cook without one if you have one. So I reflected upon the reasons that I wear an apron.
Reason 1: My mother worked till about 4pm and came home everyday and immediately started working in the kitchen in order to have dinner on the table by 5:30. Even after my father retired and was home most the say. Since she didn't have much time to change she would always wear the apron to protect her dress clothes.
Reason 2: Even if you aren't dressed up, it is common sense that you don't want to get curry powder, flour and/or meat juice all over you (or do you... cause that is super gross).
Aprons were made to keep you clean and be there as a portable towel. Not using one (to me) is like being covered in dirt and when someone offers you a towel you say, "no thanks I love being covered in crud, want to hug?"
Are you really going to lick off all that cake icing off your fingers? It will go straight to your rear, mark my words!
Reason 3: They are adorable! There are really cute aprons out there. I mean, have you seen them? I have a bit of an addiction, but enough willpower (and not enough funds) that I don't go crazy. But it's a safe bet that if you are looking to buy me a present (Oh hi, Christmas I didn't see you there...) an apron is the way to go.
Because I need more...
(As you can see by the various stains, mine get used properly.)
Also, on a completely different note, I had an awesome weekend. I got to enjoy some quality husband time and he spoiled me like I'm a princess with presents and dinner. Monday's my birthday and since it's, well, Monday, we decided to celebrate early. So I got one of my annual Olive Garden visits (we only go about 3 times a year), which was fantastic as always! I also upgraded my phone since mine was not acting properly. ALSO, I got some precious gloves I ordered in the mail! I'm pumped for it to get cold again so I can wear them.
I also got my 2nd gift in a series of 4 gifts:
Why, yes, they ARE canopic jars. Yes they are empty. I have a strong fondness for archaeology and ancient Egypt in addition to aprons and (as can be seen in the background), Minecraft.
Speaking of: Grats! to Notch and the other Mojang gang members for their official release of Minecraft this weekend. It doesn't really feel like it just came out since my husband and I have been playing it so long, but nonetheless, it is very exciting.
