I am not like that, not anymore at least. I believe I am very easily scared these days, but it seems random. It is almost as if I have multiple personalities; one of them is a fraidy cat while the other, well, she may need some therapy.
Growing up my sister and my father always watched horror movies and I was never bothered by them until one summer when I was around 10 or 11 and watched Wes Craven's New Nightmare. It should not have bothered me as I had seen all of the other films, but this time in particular, for whatever reason, I ended up having a dream in which Freddy Krueger flayed me. Needless to say that is not a very pleasant experience and it resulted in multiple nights of no sleep. Now as an adult, I have no fear of Freddy Krueger, in fact I find Robert Englund very attractive for an older gentleman. Just ask my husband my reaction when he appeared in an episode of Bones. Is it legal to duct tape your wife's mouth shut?
No, no, no... not in the costume. I'm talking about this:
Mmm Hmm
Where was I? Oh, yes. Horror Films. The sleepless week didn't stop me from watching horror films and I also spent much of my summers watching my best friend play the Silent Hill and Resident Evil games (which is just like watching a horror film, except more running into walls, unplugging of controllers, spilled ketchup and the lingering effect of panic attacks she endured when seeing a bird... in real life).
So why am I not jaded? Why does the concept of a zombie walk make me want to barricade my home and sit in my bathroom with a shotgun?
My personal deduction is that I have an overactive imagination and it immensely effects my brain producing nightmares and 'daymares'.
For Example:
If I could see you, I bet you'd look delicious.
For those of you who have not seen this movie, it is El Laberinto del Fauno (better known as Pan's Labyrinth ~despite the fact that the Faun is not supposed to be Pan... But Faun's Labyrinth just doesn't sound as cool I suppose).
If you have not seen this (you should), that guy on the right eats kids. He has no eyes in his head (that's what the ones on his plate are for, he puts them in his hands) and absolutely creeps me out. When I see pictures of him I am not really bothered, but his movements in the movie threw my imagination into overdrive and I just knew he was going to eat that little girl alive while she screamed pleas for help in Spanish through all the blood gurgling out of her throat. I may have over-reacted...
I think overall there are just some things that absolutely terrify me, such as the following:
- That stereotypical creepy dead Asian girl Oh I'm sorry, did you want to sleep tonight?
- Zombies (Kids seem to think Zombies are super cool and maybe I'm a square, but being torn open and watching decaying neighbors eat my organs is not cool no matter how I look at it).
- Distorted humans (like the way the nurses move in Silent Hill or the way creatures crawl on the ceiling).
- Waking up to something standing over me (this is my husband rarely comes to bed if I am already asleep and if he does, he goes into ninja mode).
- Doctors & Dentists (not just in the movies...)
So what are you afraid of? Is there anything that truly terrifies you?
